Reading the number

A redesign carries a risk a new site does not: you already have traffic, rankings and customers who know where things are. Most of the difference in cost between a redesign and a fresh build is the work of not breaking any of that — and it is the part most quotes leave out.

What a project like this usually includes

Audit before design
Which pages earn traffic, which convert, which nobody has opened in a year. Redesigning without this is how sites lose rankings they spent years earning.
Brand and design system
A refreshed identity applied as a reusable system, not a set of one-off page layouts.
Content migration
Moving what deserves to move, and deliberately retiring what does not.
URL mapping and redirects
Every changed address redirected to its new home. Skipping this is the single most common way a redesign loses traffic overnight.
Launch monitoring
Watching rankings, errors and conversion for the weeks after go-live, when problems actually surface.

What actually moves the number

Existing site size
Hundreds of pages of historic content means real auditing, migrating and redirect work.
How much is kept
A visual refresh on the same structure is far cheaper than rethinking the information architecture — but the latter is often what the site actually needs.
Platform change
Moving CMS adds export, transformation and re-modelling of content that was shaped by the old system.
SEO protection
Preserving rankings is skilled work and worth paying for. Losing them costs far more than the redesign.

Will a redesign hurt our search rankings?

It can, badly, and this is the main risk. Rankings are lost when URLs change without redirects, when content that was ranking gets cut, or when the new site is slower. Handled properly — audit first, map every URL, keep what performs — a redesign usually improves rankings, because the technical foundations improve with it.

Should we redesign or rebuild?

If the underlying platform is sound and the problem is how it looks, a redesign on the existing system is far cheaper. If your team cannot publish without a developer, the site is slow at the foundations, or adding a page type means a workaround, you are paying for the old build every month and a rebuild will cost less over time.

How long does a redesign take?

Usually a little longer than an equivalent new site, because of auditing and migration. For most business sites, eight to sixteen weeks — with the auditing at the start and the monitoring at the end being the parts people forget to schedule.

Can we launch in stages?

Yes, and for large sites it is often wiser. Move a section at a time, keep redirects correct throughout, and you limit the blast radius if something goes wrong — at the cost of running two designs side by side for a while.
